Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts.
Strunk and White-The Elements of Style
I grew up reading Beverly Cleary, John D. Fitzgerald, and Judy Blume and was happy to go anywhere, at any time, for any reason, as long as I could bring a book. The only panic attack I ever had is when I read the following sentence from George Orwell’s 1984, “It was a peculiarly beautiful book. Its smooth creamy paper, a little yellowed by age, was of a kind that had not been manufactured for at least forty years past…. The pen was an archaic instrument, seldom used even for signatures…” and the thought of books and pens disappearing made me break out in hives.
I earned my degree in Christian Ministries from The Masters University and worked in special education as a counselor and administrator for 22 years. I am now home full time baking bread, crafting stories,
browsing in second hand bookstores, traveling near and far, and gardening (badly).
